From 1927 to 1944 numerous and intense links developped between les Cahiers du Sud in Marseille and Le Grand Jeu in Reims. The charismatic editor of the former, André Gaillard was the central figure in a network of strong friendships and the admirer and defender of surrealist artist, until his death in 1929. Jean Ballard and René Daumal then followed in his steps.
