Orpheu no 3 : Galley Proofs Found in Oporto
Two issues of Orpheu (1915), the journal of Portuguese futurism, were published during the lifetime of their editors – Fernando Pessoa and Mario de Sá-Carneiro. The third one, though ready to be printed, was not to go beyond the galley proof stage. Part of the proofs found their way into an Oporto junk shop, and were discovered in 1949 by Alberto de Serpa – a poet and a friend of both Pessoa and Sá-Carneiro – inside a collection of Sâ-Cameiro’s poems with a predestined title, Dispersion. This third issue was only published in 1954. The writer recounts the history of this mythologised issue, announced many times between 1916 and 1935, the date of Pessoa’s passing.
