On the role of magazines in the work of Thomas Mann
Following an exposition of the German literary magazines at the turn of the century, the author analyses the various roles played by magazines in Thomas Mann’s artistic activity.
Notably, the author refers to unpublished notes left by Mann which indicate how, besides his direct collaborations with different magazines of his time (Der Frühlingssturm, Simplicissimus, Das XX. Jahrhundert), Mann also used the informations, texts and illustrations found in magazines (Die Zukunft, Die Woche, Die Neue Rundschau,…) to construct his characters and develop his narrative techniques.
