Parmi les revues illustrées néotraditionalistes fin-de-siècle, L’Estampe et l’Affiche, comparée à ses consœurs, demeure relativement méconnue. Née de la volonté de trois hommes – l’éditeur Édouard Pelletan, les critiques Noël Clément-Janin et André Mellerio – elle tente, tout en l’exploitant, de contourner « l’affichomanie » et le goût des « belles images faciles », au prix parfois d’un ton critique désabusé. En trois séries, elle manifeste ses choix d’articles et d’artistes de manière assumée, et somme toute, au nom d’une exigence assez exceptionnelle, suffisamment en tous cas pour qu’il soit nécessaire aujourd’hui d’y revenir.
Among fin-de-siècle neo-traditionalist illustrated reviews, L’Estampe et l’Affiche [Etchings and Posters] remains relatively little-known compared with others of its kind. Born by the will of three men, the Édouard Pelletan and the art critics Noël Clément-Janin and André Mellerio, it endeavoured to keep away from “postermania” and the taste for “beautiful, easy pictures” whilst in a way exploiting it and at the price of a sometimes disenchanted critical stance. Lasting for three series, it demonstrated a well-assumed choice of articles and artists that on the whole showed a rather exceptionally demanding taste that makes it worth studying.
